Questions to ask before adding an HVAC UV light

Define the purpose

Ask whether the product is intended for a coil-area application or another use. Product design and installation requirements differ. A lamp’s presence alone does not establish that it will achieve the result you expect.

Placement and safe access

The installer should follow the manufacturer’s instructions for positioning, shielding, power, and service access. Do not look at an operating UV lamp or treat it as an ordinary household bulb.

Understand upkeep

Ask about the replacement interval, indicator operation, cleaning, and ongoing costs. Include those costs in your decision. A UV accessory does not replace maintenance of coils, filters, or drainage.

Keep claims specific

Request product evidence for the stated function. S&S does not promise that an HVAC accessory prevents illness or solves every air-quality concern.

A coil application and an air-treatment claim need different evidence

Ask exactly what the UV accessory is intended to do at its installed location. A product aimed at exposed HVAC surfaces is not the same proposal as treating air moving through a duct. The design, installation and maintenance affect the result; the presence of a lamp does not establish whole-home disinfection.

EPA’s residential technical guidance explains that UV does not capture particles and should not replace filtration. Compare a proposed accessory with the actual need, and ask for the manufacturer’s documentation for that application rather than a broad claim about all indoor air.

• What surface or airstream is the lamp designed to address?
• How is exposure prevented during normal use and service?
• What replacement and cleaning schedule applies?
• Does the product have relevant information about ozone emissions?
• What work is still needed for filters, drainage or an existing moisture problem?
