Before the storm: prepare people, equipment and records
Follow local emergency instructions and make an evacuation or cooling-shelter plan before a storm approaches. Do not delay leaving to protect equipment. While conditions are safe, save equipment model and serial numbers, installation records and photographs. Secure loose outdoor belongings that could become windborne debris. Ask an HVAC professional about equipment anchoring, elevation, drainage and access during an ordinary planning visit. Raising or relocating a unit can involve refrigerant and electrical work; it is not a last-minute homeowner task.
When power fails or flooding threatens
Turn the system off using normal controls only if you can do so safely. Never enter water or approach damaged wiring, a wet electrical panel or downed lines to reach a switch. Have the utility or an appropriate professional handle an unsafe electrical situation. An outage does not establish that the HVAC equipment is damaged, but repeated resets are not a useful assessment. If indoor heat becomes unsafe, use a safe alternative location or an available community shelter rather than waiting for an appointment.
Portable generators and temporary cooling
CDC says portable generators belong outdoors, at least 20 feet from doors, windows and vents. Never operate one inside a home, basement or garage, even with openings left open. Use battery-powered or battery-backup carbon-monoxide alarms and follow the generator instructions. A qualified professional should plan the electrical connection and loads before an outage; never feed generator power into a household outlet. A portable air conditioner still needs a safe power source and installation that follows its instructions. Temporary cooling is not a reason to improvise wiring or bring fuel-powered equipment indoors.
Can the generator actually support the cooling equipment?
There is no reliable yes-or-no answer from a generator’s advertised wattage alone. Have a qualified professional review the particular cooling equipment, its starting and running requirements, the generator instructions, other loads, and the approved connection arrangement. Ask what can run together and how startup will be managed. Do this planning before an outage. Do not treat a successful brief start, an adapter, or a larger extension cord as proof that the setup is appropriate. Keep the agreed operating instructions with the equipment records.
Business continuity starts before an outage
For a business, identify who may authorize service, who can provide safe property access, and who coordinates with the utility and other trades. Keep a current equipment list and record any spaces with special operating needs. Establish how occupants will be relocated or operations paused if the building cannot be used safely. After a storm, confirm access conditions and the authority to proceed before arranging work. An HVAC appointment is one part of recovery; it does not establish that the building, electrical supply, or business operation is ready to reopen.
After the storm: inspection comes before restarting
Return only when authorities say it is safe, and stay clear of flooded areas, damaged buildings and fallen power lines. If HVAC equipment or ducts were flooded, leave the system off until a qualified professional evaluates it and says it is safe to use. Dry-looking cabinets do not establish that the inside is safe. EPA advises against using flood-affected HVAC equipment to dry the home. Report water exposure, displaced equipment, unusual sounds and visible debris without opening cabinets or attempting an internal cleanup.
Repair, replacement and corrosion need an actual assessment
Ask which indoor and outdoor components, ducts, insulation, controls and connections were affected. Describe any known saltwater exposure or pre-existing corrosion so it can be considered. The recommendation should distinguish what can be restored from what needs replacement under the applicable manufacturer guidance. Ask how contamination and damaged materials will be addressed and what will remain. If replacement is needed, revisit equipment location, elevation and anchoring with the contractor and applicable authority. A new outdoor unit alone may not address damage elsewhere in the system.
Keep the recovery record clear
From a safe location, document the observed damage and the approximate time and extent of water exposure. Keep photographs, equipment identifiers, professional findings, repair estimates and completed-work invoices together. Ask the service provider to separate diagnosis, cleanup, replacement and any work by other trades in the scope. Contact the relevant insurer or warranty provider about your actual policy or certificate; do not assume storm damage is covered. When requesting S&S assistance, provide the address, access conditions and equipment concerns so the office can confirm scope and available scheduling.
