S&S HOMEOWNER GUIDE

Your cooling and heating maintenance calendar

Practical questions to help you understand the system, prepare for a visit, and compare your options.

Before cooling demand rises

Arrange the professional cooling visit and describe anything that changed since last season. Keep the outdoor unit accessible and follow the manufacturer’s filter instructions between visits. A seasonal check can identify a concern while there is time to discuss the repair.

Before heating season

Have the heating equipment and applicable controls assessed. Tell the technician about noises, odors, uneven warmth, or repeated resets. Different heating systems need different checks; a heat pump and a gas furnace are not interchangeable maintenance scopes.

Keep the record with the equipment

Retain invoices, findings, repairs, and registration documents. Failure to follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions may void factory warranty coverage. S&S’s labor terms also require documented annual professional maintenance and recommend twice-yearly care.

Summer and winter habits

Keep airflow paths open, make reasonable thermostat changes, and watch for a developing problem. Repeated on/off cycling is not a substitute for addressing an uncomfortable home. If the system repeatedly shuts down on its own, request a diagnosis.

Leave the visit with findings you can use

ENERGY STAR recommends pre-season professional checks and identifies controls, drains, electrical condition and equipment-specific heating or cooling checks as maintenance topics. The applicable work depends on your equipment; a general checklist is not a promise that every procedure is included in a particular appointment.

Before the technician leaves, separate completed maintenance from any repair recommendation. A clear record helps you understand what was done today and what still needs a decision.

  • Confirm the equipment and systems actually serviced.
  • Ask which findings need prompt attention and which should be watched.
  • Save any operating measurements or photographs provided with the visit.
  • Confirm the filter type and the next inspection or replacement reminder.
  • Record the next seasonal visit separately from any follow-up repair.
