Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning describe several functions. A furnace is one type of heating equipment within that larger picture. A house may use a furnace, a heat pump, or another arrangement.
The air handler and ducts
An air handler moves air and contains components associated with conditioning that air. Ducts distribute it through the home. Poor distribution can affect comfort even when the outdoor equipment is operating.
Cooling moves heat
A refrigerant circuit moves heat from indoors to outdoors during cooling. The system depends on indoor and outdoor heat transfer as well as airflow. That is why a diagnosis should consider more than one component.
Myths to set aside
Bigger equipment is not automatically better. A lower thermostat setting does not fix a malfunction. New equipment does not guarantee a particular bill. An engineered option starts with the home, the load, and the scope of the work.
Think in three parts: capacity, distribution and controls
Capacity is the amount of heating or cooling the equipment can provide. Distribution is how conditioned air reaches the rooms. Controls tell the equipment when and how to operate. A complaint can involve more than one of these, which is why replacing the most visible unit may not resolve every problem.

You do not need to become a technician, but you should be able to describe what the proposed work changes and what it leaves in place.
